The TRUTH about protein

 I want to address the most common question that I get asked as a vegan. “You don’t eat meat OR dairy, so WHERE do you get your protein??!!”

It would be an understatement to suggest that our modern culture is obsessed with the idea of getting enough protein.    But, whyyyyyyyyyyyy?! Ask most people and they’ll tell you that you need protein for energy or to build muscles or to be satiated.  Ugh! The truth is that we have been BRAINWASHED! Protein should be the lowest priority on our nutritional agenda. The meat and dairy industries, subsidized by the government, have drilled this bullshit into our heads for as long as we can remember! And I’m going to give you the facts…

Protein is made up of amino acids – the building blocks of the body. There are 20 amino acids, 8 of which are “essential” which means that we have to get them from food. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that 5% of our total daily calories be from protein. Only 5%! And guess what? You don’t need to eat animal products to get your daily protein requirement. You can go to cronometer.com and work out the percentage of calories from protein you are eating in a day. Most fruits contain 5% of their calories from protein. They also contain all 8 essential amino acids. If you’re eating a diet high in fruit, you’re cruising!

Bottom line is that our nutritional needs for protein are extremely small and have been blown way out of proportion! Have you ever heard of a protein deficiency? No! Cause it doesn’t exist! (Unless you’re starving yourself and in that case you have a caloric deficiency, NOT a protein deficiency!)

The China Study, renowned as the most comprehensive study on nutrition ever conducted (with over 30 years of research) found that “people who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease”(The China Study, 7).
